Island of Flowers eBook Nora Roberts Reviews

I finished reading this maybe a week ago and have already forgotten it. The only thing I remember distinctly is saying "Is that all there is?" when I finished it. It seemed pretty inconclusive, formula to the hilt, and not very engaging. Then suddenly it was over. I don't like how Nora Robert's true publishing dates are hidden, as this must be a very old book, and I've seen her newer ones are far better and more intriguing than this one was. How do you find out the true first publishing date? Not easy.
This is really hard for me because when asked throughout the years, I'd easily say that Nora Roberts was my favorite author.

I can't and wouldn't say that anymore.

There were many things about this book that irritated me and one of them was the fact that the book was so damn short. It ends at 89% with the rest of the space filled in with adverts for other books and you end up feeling like you were gypped out of a complete book.
The story is set in present day but the main female character speaks as if she's from a different century. She say's "I shall" in nearly every sentence and sounds almost like a prim and proper Mary Poppins. Really really odd for 2013 (found out later that night, the book is circa 1982).
She's supposed to be a young modern woman and even though she was in a boarding school with nuns and now teaches at that school, never in a million years would she speak that way. No 20 something would.

She goes to Hawaii to meet with the father that never "answered her letters" only to find that her mother just never gave them to her and kept all the money and gifts that were meant for her.
She meets her fathers business partner and while he's very attracted to her, most of the time is spent yelling at her, insulting her, & accusing her of about everything you can think of. How positively romantic.

So sweet in fact, he catches her selling her locket for a hundred bucks and thinks she's a hooker. What a leap! He pins her down, almost rapes her then storms out instead.

Our very strange heroine Laine, flies back to France and resumes her classes until 10 days later, sees Dillon (Mr. Mean & Nasty) standing in the classroom doorway.

He tells her it took him those 10 days to find her, then say's "I love you and will you marry me?" Hahahahahaha

If I hadn't paid $200 for my Fire HD, I would have thrown it across the room.

A horrible story and terrible writing.

This book made me think Ms. Roberts has simply run out of ideas and no matter what happens to a main character, nothing say's "let's end the story with a smile" more than a near rape, followed by a declaration of love and a marriage proposal. Lol

A huge waste of my time.

This review has been edited due to the fact that while reading other reviews, it has come to my attention that this is an older work of Roberts (Circa 1982) passed off as new for 2013.

Well, that just pisses me off to be honest, so I've gotten a refund. I do NOT appreciate Penguin Group revamping an old, tired and poorly written book and attempting to pass it off as work from this year. I rarely like dated books and wont read something from the early 80's. I will however, stick with my earlier comments because even if this was written in the 80's, no woman walks around speaking like Mary Poppins and the story was still badly written, amateurish and stupid.
I read about one book per week, and decided on something light and appropriate for a summer beach read. This was my first Nora Roberts book. I won't read another.
I'm glad other reviewers here felt the same about the ending. It was ridiculous - cut short and impossible to believe that an editor didn't send [the author] home to write 3 more chapters to tie up loose ends and answer questions. Very unsatisfying.
As a regular visitor to Hawaii, I'm not even going to expound on the many mistakes that confused Kauai with other islands, made cultural mistakes, and took presumed literary license.
(There is no such thing as private beaches in the state of Hawaii).
The writing was repetitive - "he swore an oath" 3 times on 2 pages. Get a thesaurus..... "he uttered an expletive". There are options.
It was so poorly written that it was distracting.
The romantic scenes were repetitive.
The book REALLY lost me when he began to force himself on her and she began to relent. Seriously?? Because every young virgin wants to be raped for their first time? By the guy whose just accused her of being a paid-for whore?
As the mother of daughters, my mental response was "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?"
This begs a few questions
Is this the message we are relating to women?
Is Nora Roberts really a man?
Was this book actually written in 1958?
This book was presented as a 2013 copyright making the buyer believe it was a newly published book. As I always liked Nora's books, I purchased it even though it was $6.99, which I normally don't pay for light entertainment books. The first clue that this was an old book wad when Dillon pulled out a cigarette. The farther I read I realized this was a book I read many, many years ago. The more I read, the more it showed this story was from a different time and era in which women thought differently about being bullied by men and thinking that was romantic. Ugh! I hate that I was duped into buying this out-of-date book. And at a price that is highway robbery. I am retired and on a limited income. I can't travel like I would like so travel to places in the imagination of the story. It is a sad commentary on the greed of corporate America that businesses cheat people out of their hard earned dollars without qualm. But you won't do this again as now I'm savvy to the repressive practice of putting old books out as new ones. Shame on all if you!
